medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
John, you have a point there with the name Festus (as saints).
To add another note appropriate for the saints from today (26. September)
- the cathedral in Bayeux did have a curious and very unusual low feast degree,
called "Festum sine festo" (sic!)
As it happens was todays calendar entry in Bayeux:
"SS. Cypriane et Iustine" ("festum sine festo")
It does seem funny today, because a translation from Latin to any modern language
will deprive it of any logical sense.
Other calendars did not give any grading for such days, except perhaps the more
recent "nihil fit" (not that I can date it, but it is unlikely to be Carolingian).
It is good to know that "Solemnis" was a real Roman name - that should stop the
suppressed contractions around my lips next time a calendar from Chartres
comes across:-)
All best
Erik
