One fairly obvious distinction is that the later medieval charitable practice of providing endowments to allow some people of limited means to go on major pilgrimages (e.g. to Compostela) does not seem to have a modern analogue in the case of trips to Graceland.
But that brings us back to previously noted differences twixt then and now in people's perceptions of the _nature_ of the benefits obtainable from the veneration of important relics.
