Yes, Pratchett's Unseen University librarian and the world he inhabits
are superb creations, and Guards! Guards!, the book in which he mainly
features, contains the immortal quotation:
"Someone out there was about to find out that their worst nightmare was
a maddened Librarian. With a badge."

If we're talking fictional librarians too, how about Terry Pratchett's
orang-utan http://wiki.lspace.org/wiki/Librarian, or even the Monty
Python sketch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukJmF6f0JdQ ?! I gave a
friend the book 'Doctors in Fiction' a while ago - perhaps someone
should petition to author to write 'Librarians in Fiction'. Or has it
been done already?

Two more librarian-poets: Douglas Dunn (formerly at Hull) and Richard
Price (currently at the BL)

Perhaps poets aren't particularly famous ... relatively speaking.

That's great Mike,

You could add Philip Larkin, not a superhero or a communist (that I know
of), but he did write this little joy:

Whilst tidying up I came upon some webpages I prepared for National
Health Libraries Week a few years ago. Not wanting to waste them, I've
update them and they are now posted on our website for your delight.
