CALL for Paper "Political Satire in Medieval Italy" The Medieval Italian Studies at Kalamazoo
.
The high and late Middle Ages in Italy contain a wealth of satirical material in vernacular language that has not yet found a modern audience or modern expositor as appreciative as those who write about the major poets of erotic and spiritual love. Yet the satirical material that flourished during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries offers to modern readers a wide range of literary expressions that often contains references to political tensions of the time and criticizes individuals and groups from all social classes as well as cities and both secular and religious institutions. This panel seeks papers that examine satirical texts in Italy written in the vernacular to analyze their ethical, rhetorical, and political value within a well-defined historical matrix. Political satire could be expressed through a variety of literary genres such as the sirventese, the invective, the tenzone, the sermon, the chronicle, and the novella within both the urban and courtly centers of Italy. The panel also seeks to foster a discussion about the dynamic tension between historical facts and fiction contained in these texts, thus foregrounding the practical value of satirical writing between medieval authors and readers.
