Dear Dean,
It depends what you want to achieve. If you want simply to say 'The reasons
people have started cycling are X, Y, and Z' then you'll probably want to use
quite a large survey - sample a lot of people with some questions about how
long they have been cycling, why they started, what sort of trips they do, how
often they cycle and how far, etc.
If you want more depth, really to understand people's reasons for cycling and
to discover how people talk about cycling, then you should think about
carrying out interviews or focus groups.
Ideally, of course, you would use both these approaches to get a nice,
rounded view of the subject!
