1. Association news
1.1 Gilly Salmon has been elected Vice-Chair of ALT for 2009-2010. She
will become Chair in 2010-2011, and President in 2011-2012.
1.2 Liz Masterman and Liz Bennett have been elected to two three-year
vacancies as Trustees of ALT.
1.3 The Trustees of ALT have made the following new appointments: Liz
Bennett as Honorary Secretary; Haydn Blackey as Chair of the Membership
Services Committee (and coopted as a Trustee of ALT); John Cook as Chair
of the Research Committee (and coopted as a Trustee of ALT.
1.4 Winners of ALT competitions and awards announced at the 2009 ALT
Conference Gala Dinner in Manchester, 9 September 2009
1.4.1 ALT Learning Technologist of the Year Award 2009
* Vivien Rolfe from De Montfort University and James Clay, from
Gloucester College, who are the joint winners of the individual award.
* David Payne, from Middlesbrough College, who is highly commended in
the individual award.
* The Xerte Project Team from Nottingham University, and the Beyond
Distance Research Alliance at the University of Leicester, who are joint
winners of the team award.
* The Learning and Skills Network Mobile Learning Mentoring Team, which
is highly commended in the team award.
1.4.2 ALT-Epigeum Award for Most Effective Use of Video
* The winner of the award is Peter Hartley, LearnHigher CETL.
* The two finalists are Andrew Middleton, Sheffield Hallam University
and Mike Highfield, University of Exeter.
1.4.3 Jorum Learning & Teaching Competition:
The winner of the award are the LearnHigher CETL team.

1.4.4 Winner of the Best Published Paper at ALT-C 2009. John Traxler
from Wolverhampton University for his paper “Students and mobile
devices: choosing which dream”. Available from the ALT Open Access

1.4.5 Winner of the Best Poster at ALT-C 2009. Caroline Bell and Sarah
Sherman from the Royal Veterinary College for their poster “The APT
Stairs Model”.
1.5 Nominations remain open for Year 2 of the eCPD training programme.
The PDAs and E-Guides eCPD programmes are delivered on behalf of the
Learning and Skills Improvement Service by BDP Learning and NIACE, in
partnership with learning and skills sector representatives and the
Association for Learning Technology.

1.6 ALT sponsoring member BTL Group Ltd announces that, during the
summer of 2009, WJEC - the Cardiff-based awarding body - successfully
delivered the first ever on-screen A-Level examinations in England and

1.7 ALT sponsoring member Wimba announces that the UK national data
centre, Mimas, has selected two products from the Wimba Collaboration
Suite: Wimba Classroom - a virtual classroom, and Wimba Pronto - an
instant messaging platform, to enhance its services to the UK academic

1.8 ALT member organisation the eLearning Network (eLN) has decided to
become legally constituted as a Community Interest Company (CIC) from 1
September 2009. CIC status will put the eLN on a firm footing to
continue to provide networking services to those working with
e-learning. ALT has supported this move by eLN, by agreeing to be
identified in the eLN founding document as the recipient of eLN’s assets
in the event that the eLN CIC is dissolved at any time in the future.

1.9 Subscribing to ALT-ANNOUNCE
Staff of organisational and sponsoring members, alongside individual
members of ALT, are entitled to subscribe to ALT-ANNOUNCE, the Jiscmail
list we use to distribute this fortnightly Digest, the quarterly ALT
News, and infrequent brief announcements about ALT. Please encourage

1.10 Staffing appointments within ALT
Adam Marriott joins ALT in the new post of Head of Operations and
Contracts. Hayley Willis is now Head of Conferences and Events.

2.1 Video on a shoestring
Jointly with the E-Learning Network, ALT will be running the third of
three free 90 minute lunchtime webinars, "Video on a Shoestring", on 15
October with James Clay of Gloucestershire College and Rob Hubbard of

2.3 Coming soon
2.3.1 An ALT and eLN Lunchtime Webinar
8 December 2009. Instructional Design for Serious Games - covering the
basics of serious games design and how e-learning and games design can
overlap. Further details will follow in the next edition of the Digest.
2.3.2 An ALT cross-sectoral good practice workshop on the use of
handheld devices in teaching and learning. Supported by Becta,
facilitated by Gilly Salmon, and run at the National College for School
Leadership in Nottingham between ~17.00 on 12 November and ~15.30 on 13
November, this workshop aims to bring together experienced practitioners
from primary, secondary, FE, HE and work-based learning, to compare,
share, and document successful approaches. Further details will follow
in the next edition of the Digest.
