Hello all:

I recently was introduced to AACORN (not to be confused with the now
infamous Acorn group here in the States) and am enjoying the spate of
emails and information that are passing hands. I think that all of us
are perceiving a vacuum in higher ed--where we are missing the lack of
an interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary generalist-type degree in the
business/entrepreneurship/leadership area that also segues into design,
innovation, and creativity. I am a faculty member at The Union Institute
& University--the oldest nontraditional university in the States. In my
courses on leadership and social justice, I routinely incorporate weeks
of work on how to make sense of art (translated into how to make sense
of chaos in the visual field when you know little about art), looking
closer at art (or a business problem) to garner visual cues about
overall interpretation, and the cognitive process (why do we choose our
range of focus? with training, can we revise our focal range?). It's all
very complex and multi-layered; however, my students seem to get a lot
out of these courses and routinely come back for more.

I think that it will be revolutionary as well as evolutionary to
introduce degree programs that incorporate serious academic theory with
praxis in the market place. There is a need and a hunger for this type
of relevance and I applaud those of you who are trying to create
programs in these areas. I look forward to hearing more....Anu Mitra
