PURPOSE OF JOB

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a strong statistical and programming background who wants to use his/her skills to support development of innovative solutions to support sustainable use of aquatic living resources. As part of a small group of statisticians, modellers, and biologists you will be involved with a range of research topics on freshwater and marine fish species.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

You will contribute to the design, analysis and reporting of experiments, monitoring programmes and surveys and will be expected to develop stochastic population life-cycle models. This is a great opportunity to be involved in both marine and freshwater research and contribute to the evaluation of fishery management scenarios and provision of advice to national Government and international institutions. You will also participate in expert working groups in support of both national and international aquatic science programmes. You will be encouraged to publish your work and take initiative in bidding for new projects and establishing collaborations with other research institutes. You will:

*	work as part of a team to develop innovative solutions to statistical and modelling problems in fisheries science
*	provide statistical support to scientists from a range of disciplines
*	develop your own areas of fisheries research including proposals and programmes to attract funding from national and international sources
*	contribute to scientific papers and reports
*	provide teaching & coaching in statistics and raise awareness of its utility

*	work with a range of international collaborators, which will require travelling in the UK and overseas.

There could also be opportunities to participate in fieldwork.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

Academic qualifications for entry at PB5 level you will have a post-graduate qualification in statistics or closely related subject with a major statistics component. To be considered at the higher level (PB6) you must have a PhD or equivalent experience, a track record of winning funding and publishing in relevant topics and experience of supervising staff and managing projects.

Experience with statistical/modelling software such as R and SAS. Knowledge of modern statistical methods (good understanding of Bayesian techniques is highly desirable). Very good programming skills in at least one of the following languages: C++, Visual Basic, FORTRAN, R. You will possess strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain statistical methods to non-specialists. Strong personal motivation and flexibility is essential as is the ability to meet deadlines. You will have good planning and organisational skills and an interest in marine, freshwater or environmental sciences.

Although not essential previous experience of providing statistical or modelling support to research programmes, experience of providing training in statistics and the ability to identify and seek additional business opportunities is preferred. You will show a willingness to travel both nationally and internationally. It would be desirable if you have experience in using Bayesian techniques and probabilistic modelling.

This post is in Cefas Pay Band 5/6. The salary range is from £<> to £<> pa. In addition there is the opportunity for all staff to earn a performance related bonus.
