NUGGET AND SNOWY
When you appeared on the main street of town
like a new monument
to an old friendship, every face in the cafe
split into smiles
and the afternoon grew festive.
Nugget, you'd come ten thousand miles,
Fort Lauderdale to Boggy Creek,
just to see us (well,
that's how it felt);
and Snowy, you'd skipped work
and driven all day on the whizzing highway
just to see us; just to see
Nugget and me.
After a night of stars and laughter,
now you've gone -
Snowy back to Sydney
on a red-eye bus
to greet the dawn sitting at your desk,
Nugget to the northern city
that hugs its muddy river tight.
Dear friends, you put
the sun back in my heart
that flutters like a flag in the breeze
as I drive westwards along the heavenly highway
where we drove eastwards together all those years ago.
Brian
