Dear Friends,
Thanks Lubomir for trying to point out university culture diversity, but
as we could expect, an Anglophone has always to blame the Germans. The
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang syndrome. However, another Anglophone, David as
provided us great number of examples relations between practice and
research that are and will be useful that shows that we are in very rich
transitional period for academic institutions and degrees (thanks very
much for the DART website).
Ken you wrote:
“Eduardo is describing a degree in advanced professional practice. Degrees in advanced professional practice are valid and useful, and they serve an important role in society". If I need a physician, I want someone with a degree in the practice of medicine rather than a degree in medical research.”
(end of quote)
No I’m not describing a degree in advanced professional practice! (I would like that you could imagine me sounding as Jon Stewart from the Daily Show)
I’m describing academic degrees that, for teaching in universities requirements, are equal to PhDs! In fact, under my country’s law, with no distinction whatsoever!
But let me quote OECD’s report:
“The wording of the current legislation should be re-examined with this objective in mind. While not suggesting definitive wording for this purpose, words such as the following could be considered: “PhD degrees are given on the basis of a body of work (either through publication, exhibition, composition or performance) that displays the originality and rigour expected of a research degree in any field”.
“Furthermore, consideration should be given to award PhD by Publication. Artists, designers or performer should be given the option to use an existing body of published creative work as part fulfilment of a PhD”
(end of quote)
Again like Jon Stewart whispering:
“they are using the word, Ken! They are using “pee age dee! And they are writting in English! Can they do this?...”
And thanks Tiiu for your post and for Frenchising my name to Edouardo, sounds much better,
It comes to my mind that the most wonderful French I ever heard was from Quebec, with beautiful syllables sounding like old bicycle horns. Very similar to our ão, ãe
Faculté d’Aménage(horn)
Best
Eduardo
PS: Like Chris, I'm still interested in reading about structuring a
project based doctorate
