yes, and thanks, George, for helping me discover more about the interesting
fact that "At Isernia, ithyphallic wax images were among the ex-votos
offered.... Sir William Hamilton, British diplomat, collector and antiquarian
at Naples....managed to obtain a number of the wax phalli, which eventually
came to rest in the unseen depths of the British Museum."
and that "Isernia came to be considered a doomed
Catholic Sodom by Protestant polemicists. Hamilton
turns out to have been a wealthy libertine who went
so far as to steal his nephew's girlfriend, Emma,
turning her into a kind of soft-core sideshow in
Naples, only to be cuckolded by her in the notorious
affair with Lord Nelson."
i have been blissfully unaware of any "methodological fragmentation resembling
that which the phalli themselves literally suffered in their cardboard box in
the bowels of the Museum."
this is heady stuff, indeed.
actually, i'm ashamed to say, my real interest is less in genitalia, as such,
than in wax as a medium for sculpture in the M.A.
which is to say that, for me, the Medium is the Massage.
clearly, i did not make myself clear.
