ESRC Seminar Series
Abjection and Alterity in the Workplace
Seminar 4
Managing and Legislating Workplace Abjection September 23rd 2009
Heslington Hall
University of York
This fourth and final seminar in the series will reflect on the key themes
that have emerged throughout the previous three events and in the course of
intervening discussions within the networks that have been formed. It will
also explore new questions, thinking through ways of taking the focus of
the series forward in relation to both managerial and policy applications
and further research. It is hoped that speakers and discussants will focus
on the role of management - here understood as what managers and
administrators do in formal organisational settings - and broader forms of
social regulation and political legislation in 'controlling' and
'containing' abjection. Particular questions that the seminar might focus
on, but will not be limited to, include:
In what ways are certain groups of vulnerable people stigmatised or
rendered abject, and what is the role of management and legislation in this
respect?
Are management, legislation and regulation part of the problem or the part
of the solution - or both - when it comes to understanding and addressing
the stigma of abjection?
How does the concept of abjection help us to make sense of contemporary
policy debates and developments relating to themes such as terrorism,
racism, asylum seeking, mental health, genetic technologies, gender
recognition, sex trafficking and so on?
How might academic networks inform and include policy makers and
legislators in a search for effective strategies of social and workplace
inclusion?
