Ok! I'm up for a meeting about this. Meanwhile, some quick thoughts:
* Accreditation - jointly through ALDinHE/SEDA (and/or HEA?)
* also should be worth ?20/40/60? M level credits - preferably
recognised within relevant local PG frameworks. For instance, we have
two modules "Teaching in HE" and "Teaching your Research" which are
accepted within our University Research Training Framework, so provide
an opportunity for PG research students to gain teaching experience and
training. I think most HEIs have something similar
* Course delivery a combination of:
- (national, online) independent study materials - to be developed by
LDHEN members - designed to provide some underpinning theoretical
knowledge about learning + practical advice on effective 1-2-1
facilitation techniques, video case studies etc etc with a web2.0 forum
for discussion and exchange of ideas, sharing of materials etc
- (local, face to face) ideally, one or more workshop sessions run by
local LD /ED staff and/or a designated local mentor and/or action
learning sets
- assessment by e-portfolio to include an initial review of current
skills and experience, CPD plan and review, responses to the online
materials, reflective journal or critical incident analyses. Ideally the
assessment would be devolved to local LD/ED staff but it could be
arranged nationally with a panel of approved moderators?
Lets see if we can get a group together to take this forward....
Best wishes
Pauline

Thanks Pauline,
I like these ideas a lot. We are working with Manchester, and my
colleague Suzanne Waugh is trained as a pass trainer, so we have the
mentoring angle covered. I would like something that could be accredited
and therefore portable across institutions, for postgraduates who have
an interest in developing their skill in this area. Perhaps interested
colleagues should meet up and take this forward.
Best wishes

My colleague Catherine Mcconnell is on leave at the moment, but is
developing some peer mentoring schemes based on University of Manchester
PASS system. Not sure if the training is appropriate for 1-2-1
/postgraduates.
Either way, I'd be interested in some kind of collaboration on this.
Some of the skills are similar to those used in personal tutoring, and
we have developed some support materials for that which I am hoping to
turn into an online 'course' to complement face to face workshops for
tutors.
Also what you suggest is just the kind of thing that the LDHEN
community/ALDinHE could develop collectively to support general LD
professional development and accreditation?

Subject: Stand alone training for delivering 1-2-1 study skills
Dear all,
We are planning to offer some of our postgraduates the opportunity to
deliver 1-2-1 Study Skills support. Does anyone use or know of a stand
alone module or part of a course that we could use to train them in the
skills they will need? I feel sure there must be something, and I'd
rather not write a whole training package from scratch..
Also, f anyone else is thinking in this way, we would be very pleased to
collaborate.
Thanks and best wishes
