Hi Adam,
Well, as of now, I have no plans working on gender and animes -- but maybe I should ;-) The pardo, the Locarno festival, one of the top 10 festivals in the world, is not what it used to be this year. The organization and the films have left many people wanting. The world of mangas and animes is pretty removed from the likings of most of the people attending the festival, they are mostly "Bildungsbürger". Despite the fact that the festival has had this focus for a while (it was the brain child of the woman who is now running the Miami festival, a manga connaisseuse), and despite the fact that they are collaborating with a museum in Turino, Italy, on a big show on the topic, they were unable to come up in time with a book or even a brochure explaining to "us" why we should like these genres. From what I heard thru the grapevine, the person in charge of the publication was unable to secure the rights to the pictures in time. And unlike other festivals, they make no point of reaching out to the younger audiences who actually love these Japanese films and cartoons but who "we" need badly in order to sustain an interest in films and film festivals in general. Still, the film crowd does appreciate being alerted to a tradition they hardly knew before (my sense).
Thanks then for the biblio. Harris I have read coz she is one of the staples of the field, the Hopkins book I will order.
Nina

Hi Nina,
If you're exploring shojo then it may be useful to have a look at some
of these texts:
Allison, Anne (2000) Permitted & Prohibited Desires: Mothers, Comics
and Censorship in Japan: University of California Press.
Allison, Anne (2006) Millennial Monsters: Japanese Toys and the Global
Imagination: University of California Press. [particularly chapter 5
on Sailor Moon]
Miller, Laura and Jan Bardsley (eds) (2005) Bad Girls of Japan:
Palgrave Macmillan.
Napier, Susan (2007) From Impressionism to Anime: Japan as Fantasy and
Fan Cult in the Mind of the West: Palgrave Macmillan [Chapter 6 on
cosplay could be relevant]
Other texts that I thought could of some more general relevance are:
Harris, Anita (2004) Future Girl: Young Women in the Twenty First
Century: Routledge
Hopkins, Susan (2002) Girl Heroes: The New Force in Popular Culture:
Pluto Press.
Good luck with the article. It sounds very interesting
Kind Regards,
Adam Stapleton
