DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND PRIMARY CARE Research Associate in
Statistical Genetics or Bioinformatics
Salary: 27,183-35,469 pa
Limit of tenure: Grant funds are available for up to three years.
Applications are invited for a Research Associate to jointly work in the
Genetic Epidemiology research group at the Department of Public Health and
Primary Care and at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The successful
candidate will be expected to address bioinformatics, statistical and
programming needs related to the design and analysis of genomic
epidemiological studies. Specifically, the successful candidate will be
involved in developing analytical approaches to examine data generated by
new DNA sequencing technologies, including analyses of rare and common
genetic variants in the context of complex diseases and traits.
Applicants should have numerate first degree (natural sciences, maths,
statistics or computer science) and a postgraduate degree (Masters/PhD) in
statistics, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related discipline,
and comprehensive knowledge of relevant algorithms and software tools.
The successful candidate must have expertise in high throughput data
manipulation, analysis and visualisation using relevant statistical packages
and programming languages (Perl or C). It is also essential that the
candidate has clear communication skills with the ability to present
methodologies and results succinctly, the ability to work within a team, and
to also provide advice, training and support for researchers.
Experience of analysis and handling large data sets, including genomic data,
additional languages, and proficiency in the use of relational databases
would be desirable. Familiarity with Linux network/server administration
would also be an advantage.
