Yes, I've found that reading the manual and going through the analysis
described in chapters 28 onwards using the sample data sets is a good way to
start. As well as getting a feel for a 'typical' sequence of steps, it also allows
you to get used to some of the features of the SPM user interface.
(Although I'm very new to all of this too, so others may be able to comment
on whether the steps described in these sample analyses are in fact 'typical'
of what you might do with your own data sets).
