We could end up with quite a menagerie!
I have just discovered this quote this morning:
'I remember about twelve years ago, to have seen a very old woodcut, which exhibited a whole pack of hounds harnessed and laden with little bags of tin, travelling over the mountains of Dartmoor; these animals being able to cross the deepest bogs of the forest in situations where there were no roads, and where no other beasts of burden could pass.'
This is in a letter dated 1835, from Mr. Edmund Pearse (surgeon) in Tavistock to Mrs. Bray, quoted in full in 'The Borders of the Tamar and Tavy' by Mrs. Bray Vol 2 p. 376. I wonder if the woodcut survives somewhere?
