Which of course is where Metz is. Curiously, though, neither Mme Royal's father's family nor her mother's is from a present or former territory of the diocese of Metz. The father's family is from the diocese of Saint-Dié and the mother's is from that of Nancy. Both dioceses are later eighteenth-century creations arising out of the dismemberment of the ancient diocese of Toul. Was Segolena also venerated in this more southerly diocese? Or did the name Ségolène entered the Royals' onomastic repertoire through some connection (relative or close friend) from the diocese of Metz?
Best again,
John Dillon
