medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The places in France that I associate with Becket's exile are the abbey of
Pontigny and the nearby cities of Sens and, to a lesser degree, Auxerre.
For the very little this is worth, I'm not aware of any special veneration
(as opposed to the general national one) of D. at any of these.
Also Gisors. The tradition here in Portsmouth is that Jean de Gisors who had
been Thomas' host in France and a personal friend, and who was also the Lord
of the Manor here on Portsea Island, [the familiar business of a lord
holding manors in both England and Normandy] founded a new parish church for
the fishing village and dedicated to St Thomas a Becket within a decade of
his canonisation. The surviving fragment of this 1183 (?) parish church is
now incorporated into the present-day [Church of England] Cathedral of St
Thomas. [The fishing village is now the City and Naval Dockyard of
Portsmouth and occupies the whole of Portsea Island and beyond.]
When I get back from Leeds, I'll try to look out some reliable references if
anyone wants them.
Brenda,
