medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all, ´
I´ve been looking at vernacular accounts of Thomas Becket's martyrdom,
and note that he commends himself to the Virgin Mary, the patrons of the
church, and St. Dionysius. Does anyone have any ideas (other than the
parallelism between a head wound and beheading) why Dionysius?
Was his cult particularly prominent in England and/or the areas in France
where Thomas had been in exile?
Thanks in advance,
Meg
