Visit to the John Rylands Library, Manchester - Friday 14 August, 2pm
The CILIP RBSCG are organising a free member visit to the John Rylands
Library, Manchester, which reopened in 2007 after a four-year period of
refurbishment funded by a Heritage Lottery Grant. It serves as the Special
Collections Division of the John Rylands University Library and houses some of
the most significant books and manuscripts ever produced. Highlights include a
Gutenberg Bible, a fragment of St John’s Gospel (considered the earliest
surviving fragment of the New Testament in any language), an impressive
collection of Caxton’s printings (including The Recuyell of the Histories of
Troye, the first book to be printed in English) and the complete publications of
the Kelmscott Press, as well as the personal papers of distinguished historical
figures such as Elizabeth Gaskell and John Wesley.
The main part of the visit will begin at 2pm. However, earlier arrivals will be
able to view the current library exhibition on Charles Darwin from 10am, when
the public galleries open.
Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. If you are
interested, please fill out the booking form on the CILIP RBSCG website
http://www.cilip.org.uk/specialinterestgroups/bysubject/rarebooks/events
and return it to [log in to unmask] Further details about the
event can also be found there.
***** If you are not currently a member of the CILIP Rare Books and Special
Collections Group, this is a good time to join. The Rare Books and Special
Collections Group unites librarians responsible for collections of rare books,
manuscripts and special materials, with other interested individuals. It
promotes the study and exploitation of rare books, encourages awareness of
preservation, conservation and digitisation issues, and fosters training
opportunities related to the maintenance, display and use of collections. The
RBSCG organizes regular events, including an annual conference, workshops,
and visits. All you need to do is join CILIP and select it as one of your 2 free
Special Interest Groups. Further information can be found on our website
