From our scrapbook on How Publishers are (not) Helping Libraries in the
Downturn:
This must be a new low point in double speak and customer deception:
There was a comment on liblicense-l that said "Kudos to SAGE for showing
some
real leadership in moving to e-only – AND, lowering prices!”
But the e-only option is neither new nor does it mean that SAGE will
actually lower prices
for 2010 compared to 2009. To the contrary, SAGE journal prices increase
by 4% on
average, but 15% for these titles that migrate to e-only. Even if you
still paid for the
combined rate in 2009, the nominal price increase is 4% (and still 15%
for a EU
country like Germany where VAT rate on e-only is 19% instead of 7% for
combined
subscriptions that include online free with print).
SAGE has partnered with Arbor Day Foundation to plant a tree for every
subscription
that moves to the E-access option. But ...
For the 10% extra price increase on each of these SAGE titles in 2010*,
we could buy
10 Give-A-Tree Cards from Arbor Day Foundation (at $6 each).
If you cancelled one of these titles completely, you could buy 200
Give-A-Tree Cards
from Arbor Day Foundation a year instead (they give a discount...)
Bernd-Christoph Kaemper, Stuttgart University Library
*The average price of these titles in 2009 was USD 580 (GBP 340). None
of these
12 titles is announced to have an increase in frequency (no issues
published) for 2010.
