A PhD studentship is available at the University of the West of England for a
research study 'applying the life course approach to walking and cycling'. This
is an interdisciplinary studentship that has been awarded jointly by the
Medical Research Council (MRC) and Economic and Social Sciences Research
Council (ESRC) as part of an initiative to foster greater interaction between
the social and medical sciences. 119 studentship applications were submitted
to the competiition and 20 were awarded. The studentship will cover fees and
provide a stipend of £15,290 for the 2009/10 academic year with cost of living
adjustments in Years 2 and 3.
The studentship will be jointly supervised by Kiron Chatterjee (Senior Lecturer
in Transport Planning in the Centre for Transport and Society) and Selena
Gray (Professor of Public Health in Centre for Public Health Research).
Applicants must have a good honours degree (minimum 2.1 or equivalent) and
be able to demonstrate that they will by September 2009 have completed a
Master's degree from a UK university. The Master's degree can be in either the
social or medical sciences, but must be appropriate to the research area (e.g.
transport studies, public health, biological sciences, sociology, psychology,
geography, social statistics). Applications should indicate how their
background would enable them to undertake this research project and how
they would initially propose to tackle the project.
