Subject: Re: [PSCI-COM] Teaching genetics in the classroom
Hi Annabel,
The best research I've found on this topic comes from the
'Learning in Science Group' at the University of Leeds. They surveyed
14-16 year olds and found lots of confusion on this topic (which
obviously indicates that it's tricky to teach). I've listed some
references from the Leeds groups below. These articles were published a
while ago, but from my experience their findings still hold true.
I also did some research on this myself and surveyed teachers
about teaching the social and ethical issues associated with genetics.
Generally, teachers found this area particularly challenging, but I did
complete this survey in 2001 and the curriculum has changed
significantly since then.
At Nowgen we have lots of requests from teachers to help them
find visual and kinaesthetic ways to teach genetic concepts. We have
found lots of experiments, animations and models that make the concepts
clearer, but the story we hear is that teachers certainly find this
topic difficult.
If you'd like to discuss further, please do get in touch with me
off list. All the best,
Kate

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Teaching genetics in the classroom
Dear all,
I am trying to gather evidence that genetics is a difficult subject to
communicate effectively in the normal classroom setting. Does anyone
know of any research that has been done in this rather specific area?
Anecdotal evidence could also be useful, or previously-funded projects
which have tried to address this issue.
Thanks in advance,
Annabel
