Hi Annabel,
Last year we conducted a modest piece of research to find out how Jeans for
Genes Day, our annual fundraising campaign for children with genetic
disorders, is perceived by schools who participate in the day. The research
involved phone and face-to-face interviews with a small but regionally diverse
group of teachers.
Our findings suggested that many teachers are intimidated by the prospect of
discussing genetics with thier pupils, particularly those who would not normally
directly encounter this subject in their subject area, e.g. primary or PSHE
teachers. In particular, they were concerned about what terminology to use
and how to make the subject something that the children could realte to in
thier everyday lives.
In response to this finding we have developed a range of resources for helping
teachers to engage school children with genetics, available for free on our
new education website: http://www.genesareus.org
Please feel free to get in touch if you would like to know more about our
research findings or educational resources.
Kind Regards,
Ailsa Taylor
