Hi Tracy
For advice about testing these people I would contact the HSE lab in
Buxton. With regard to the machine it doesn't matter what it is it
needs regular servicing when seals etc should be checked. Obviously
this has not happened which lays them open to a possible prosecution
under COSHH. The least they should be doing is reporting this as a
Dangerous Occurrence, not using the machine until it is serviced or
condemned. It may be worth contacting other surgeries to find out
how/where they gat their machines serviced. Hope this is useful.
Regards
Vicky Wells

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Mercury Exposure
I have just had a phone call from a local dental practice who discovered
thier
mercury mixer (a Denta Max Machine) had leaked yesterday. 5 staff work
at
the practice.
They have COSHH assessments and have used a mercury spillage kit to
clear
up.
The Practice manager is worried as her gold ring had been damaged, and
states she does not know how long this leak may have been going on for.
She is asking that her staff are unrine tested by the department. I am
waiting
contact form Health & Safety for the PCT for a bit more inof about the
machine involved.
The Practice manager says she cannot contact the company to service the
machinge as they no longer exist!
I have not dealt with Mercury spillage for a long time, any input is
very
welcome.
Thanks
Tracy
