italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
CALL FOR PAPERS
“Fusion and con-fusion: migrating cultures and the dynamic of exchange”
University of Naples “Parthenope”
23-24 November 2009
The Language Centre of the University of Naples “Parthenope” will host a
two-day conference (Naples, 23-24 November 2009). The aim
of the conference - organized by Professor Colomba La Ragione - with the
collaboration of research groups from the Universities of
Pescara and Salford (UK) - is to bring together scholars and academics from
as diverse fields as possible (linguistics,
literature, cultural studies, history, history of art, film studies,
economics, law, history of fashion, etc) in order to analyse
their intersections and stimulate a dialogue across traditional disciplinary
boundaries. Briefly, the main idea is to study how
cultural differences have shaped and continue to shape relations between
Italy and other countries, especially the Anglo-American
world.
The conference is devoted to the dynamic of cultural encounters which is
part of the ongoing debate on identity as a dynamic – and
actively dialogic – construction. The term "dialogism" is derived from
Mikhail Bakhtin and, of course, implies an opposition to
the Marxist term "dialectics". In this respect, the aim of the conference is
to recognize the complex interplay of ideas across
cultures and time as a means of making sense of the intricate process of
encounters between cultures. If the world continues to be
shaken and invigorated by the spatial dynamic of cultural exchange, it is
mainly through the migration and displacement of people,
translations of works, study of comparative literary perspectives and
influences, and the expansion of forms of globalization. As
well as drawing attention to the current debate on identity, the conference
theme may also encompass broader topics such as the
modality of dialogue between cultures, civilizations, economic and political
ideologies, and the past and the present.
Papers are invited for 20-minute presentations (plus discussion).
The working languages of the conference are English, Italian and French.
Panel proposals with three to five papers should
include, besides the panel proposal, abstracts of the papers in the panel,
and brief curriculum vitae of the chair, presenters,
and discussant(s) if any. Abstracts should not exceed 300 words in length
(references excluded) and should be sent as email
attachments to [log in to unmask] by July 10, 2009.
