Colleagues,
David has opened a thread on the HEFCE consultation and I have added a little more detail from the meeting in the hope that we might now get a discussion going on the AGS Blog.
Have a good weekend,
Frank

Dear Colleagues,
As the recent debate over the future of German at QUB, and the discussions
of the REF and HEFCE's plans for languages have shown, the germanstudies
mailbase is a useful, but not ideal tool for conducting ongoing debates on
the future of German Studies. Given current circumstances, it seems likely
that more debates and consultations of this type will become necessary. To
make discussion of particular issues a bit easier, the AGS would like to
propose the institution of a blog, which will provide a forum for
interested individuals to carry on more involved exchanges. We have
consulted Duncan Large as administrator of the mailbase and would like to
propose that the blog can be used in the following ways:
1. If issues are raised on the mailbase that seem likely to provoke
prolonged debate, I will offer the people leading the discussion the
opportunity to transfer to the blog and will set up an entry for them where
others can post their comments.
2. The AGS will also from time to time ask members to comment on particular
issues using the blog.
3. I am also happy to post conference announcements, calls for papers or
new book announcements as and when people send these direct to me
([log in to unmask]). These can include images and web links.
The mailbase remains a useful way of contacting AGS members and others in
UK and Irish German Studies, but we hope that the blog will allow for
further discussions to take place in a format that is easier to use.
