Hi All

I remember there were a few of these at the Yorkshire Museum when I was there a few years ago. I had some discussion with Craig Barclay who was Keeper of Numismatics at the time about putting something together to publish but it never got off the blocks. It certainly would be interesting to see the range (or prehaps lack of) of designs etc.

(we have noe in Scarborough!)

Best Wishes
Will

Jon,
We have one of the coins embedded in lava from the 1820s, which I just happened to come across yesterday by coincidence. I can send more details if required.

However, unless a clear expert emerges who has already written the definitive history of these things, perhaps someone might consider writing a paper or a note for the Geological Curator? It is clearly a topic of some interest given the number and speed of replies to the original email.

Subject: stamped lava 'medallions'

Dear All,

I've received an enquiry concerning souvenir 'medallions' stamped out of freshly erupted lava. We have a couple of these in the Warwickshire collection, from 19th century eruptions of Vesuvius. I'd be grateful for information on any relevant research, collections, or articles.

With thanks

Jon
