Subject: [SHCG-LIST] Enquiry: Ship's Medicine Chests

Dear All,
I have been doing some research into a Ship's Medicine Chest in our
collection, sparked off by the reminiscences of a local pharmacist, who told
us about his work checking and signing off the contents of such chests on
board fishing vessels.
So far I've established what's in the chest, I've discovered the Merchant
Shipping Medical Scales and the Ship's Captain Medical Scales (both of my
copies are 1950s). Although a bit of searching has revealed all this, it
seems there is a gap in the research between domestic medicine chests and
naval medicine/surgeons.
Does anyone know when merchant vessels were first required by law to carry
medicines? Can anyone help me by recommending a good book? FirstBASE
recommends "Antique Medical Chests" by Anne Mortimer Young but before I
spend my limited budget, does anyone know if it talks about ships' chests?
Or does anyone know if "Rough Medicine: surgeons at sea in the age of sail"
by Joan Druett includes merchant ships?
I would greatly appreciate any pointers.
Jenny
