We have a laptop which connects to our wireless network to replicate
off-campus access. We used to have a non-networked PC that used dial-up
but it was cumbersome. The laptop works fine.

We use a proxy/shell account.

Hello there,
At Birmingham we have wireless access in the office and an account on
the visitor network. This logs me in as if I was off campus and I can
either test resources that are NOT ip authenticated or log into the
university proxy server for proxy testing.
It's something we only set up last year in order to test Shibboleth
authentication migration and it has improved our testing procedures no
end!

Here at Leeds we have a separate PC which still has a dial-up
connection. This is proving to be increasingly impractical given 1) It
is on the same line as the team's phone, and 2) the increasing file
sizes involved for resources we want to test are causing ever-lengthier
download times.
I have been trying to get onto a broadband arrangement. Initially, I
tried a dongle as this would avoid the permanence of wires, etc. and
upheaval if the team were to change location. Unfortunately, the fact we
are situated in the middle of a large building of substantial concrete
construction meant the mobile signal was rarely strong enough for 3G
speeds to be reached. The arrangement's advantage over dial-up was thus
cancelled out (I had beforehand done a crude survey as to the signal
strengths for colleagues' mobile phones which suggested a dongle would
be worth trying given the 14-day cooling-off period on the contract if
all was not well).
Hardwired broadband, for us, is the only option. However, as there is a
remote possibility the team will be re-locating this is currently on
hold.

Hi,
What arrangements do other institutions have for testing eresources off
campus? Do you have access to broadband? We currently use dial up which
is proving to be a little slow.
Many thanks,
Sharon
