Dear all,
As part of the work on our cataloguing strategy here at the Rylands, we are
planning to compile a set of criteria for assessing the significance of archives;
this will form one of the key elements we use to determine cataloguing
priorities.
While we are taking the Logjam criteria as the basis for this exercise, we feel
that Logjam is (a) slightly biased towards institutional archives and a local
authority context; and (b) is less detailed than we would like, e.g. in terms of
assessing an archive's value for actual and potential audiences, different
types of use, or different areas of academic teaching and research.
We are therefore very interested in finding out whether other institutions
(particularly HE special collections and national libraries) have carried out any
refinement of Logjam or put together their own criteria for determining
significance. Information and examples would be very gratefully received,
either on or off-list. I am happy to put together a summary of responses for
other interested parties.
Best wishes,
Fran
