VISIT OF PROFESSOR S. MOLCHANOV
Professor Stanislav Molchanov (University of North Carolina at
Charlotte, USA) will be visiting the University of Leeds from 20 June
till 4 July 2009. The visit is partially supported by an LMS Scheme 2
grant.
An internationally renowned expert in probability theory and
mathematical physics, Professor Molchanov has made fundamental
contributions in numerous areas including the theory of Markov
processes, random walks and diffusions on groups and Riemannian
manifolds, statistical mechanics, localization theory for the Anderson
operator, random media theory, percolation theory, random walks in
random environments, spectral theory of differential operators, and
applications in astrophysics, oceanography, chemical physics, quantum
computing and random number generating.
During his visit Professor Molchanov will give the following talks:
• Thursday 25 June, Queen Mary, University of London (c/o Prof. I.
Goldsheid, [log in to unmask]), "Recent generalizations of the
Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum inequalities"
• Wednesday 1 July, University of Leeds (c/o Dr L. Bogachev,
[log in to unmask]), "Reaction-diffusion equations for growth
processes and applications to spatial dynamics of biological
populations"
• Friday 3 July, University of Durham (c/o Prof. M. Menshikov,
[log in to unmask]), "Random walks in an attractive
potential and phase transitions for homopolymers"
Professor Molchanov will also take part in the ICMS Workshop "Stochastic
Population Dynamics and Applications in Spatial Ecology" (Edinburgh,
15-20 June 2009, http://icms.org.uk/workshops/spatialecology), where he
will give a set of lectures entitled "Ideas of random media
theory and mathematical models of the population structure dynamics".
