I think it's clearly better if users can use the direct access, and
there shouldn't be any particular difficulty in doing it. However, while
a VO like atlas can adapt its frameworks so that everyone gets the right
access method for each site, there will probably always be VOs where
people just use gridftp everywhere as it's currently the only thing
which every SE supports, and which works whether the file is local or
remote.
