Applications are invited for a Chair in Observational Astronomy in the
Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Leicester. Leicester
hosts one of the largest university-based astronomical research centres
in Europe with major programmes in theoretical astrophysics,
observational astronomy, space science and instrumentation. Applicants
should have an excellent record of research achievement coupled with
expertise that complements and enhances the current astronomy and
astrophysics programme of the Department. We are particularly interested
in appointing a candidate who will be able to lead the exploitation of
the next generation of astronomical facilities (e.g. JWST, GAIA, ELT,
SKA, IXO) and contribute to the development of new opportunities beyond
these. They should also be able to demonstrate evidence of leadership
in their research area and a commitment to high quality teaching. In
addition, to be considered for the Chair, applicants should have an
outstanding international reputation and be involved in setting the
research agenda at national and international level. The successful
candidate will join the internationally-renowned X-ray and Observational
Astronomy Group.
