mediaeval theories of optics - aargh - Averroes and Aquinas and
Albertus Magnus et al - and find this -

No you can't have half my earnings, but they are no doubt fairy gold
anyway and will vanish in the dawnlight and reveal the world/word
without glamour, in all its ordinary fullness and wretchedness.
