medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Could it have been the equivalent of a canon's habit in secular cathedral chapter, or indeed of a modern Monseigneurial cassock with its violet trim? In practice it might have been the wearing of violet or fur mozzetta as part of the choir habit.
Wearing such a habit might well have implied a degree of independence from them that the Abbot and monks of Cluny did not wish to seem to have conceded.
