APOLOGIES FOR ANY CROSS-POSTING
PhD Research Studentships at Glasgow Caledonian University
Applications are invited for two PhD Research Studentships within the Caledonian Business School. The studentships are for a period of four years, subject to satisfactory progress, and provide payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus an annual stipend of £13,900 (please note that students from outside the EU are required to pay the difference between International and EU fees: currently this would amount to £6,100 per annum). The successful candidates are expected to undertake up to 6 hours of academic support activity per week.
The two studentships are as follows:
"Common Wealth" Games? Enabling Discourses and Disempowering Practices around Glasgow 2014 (Ref: CBS/09/02)
Using discourse analysis and a range of ethnographic approaches the successful candidate will explore the tension between media and official discourses on the one hand, and alternative/campaigning and community voices on the other, including community participants' assisted video-documentation.
To informally discuss this opportunity please contact Prof Hugh O'Donnell on 0141 331 3262 (except between 6 and 24 July), or Dr John Cook on 0141 331 3845 (except between 29 June and 3 July).
Cultural Vibrancy and the Impacts of the Commonwealth Games on the City of Glasgow (Ref: CBS/09/11)
The purpose of this research is to evaluate the extent to which the bidding process and subsequent implementation phase for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow intimates a crisis of legitimation in citizen engagement and ownership of major events. It will review the underlying rationale for civic investment in the 2014 Games, interrogate the key actors involved in setting structures for its implementation and evaluate the emergent and professed benefits to the wider citizenry.
To informally discuss this opportunity please contact Dr David McGillivray on 0141 331 8464 (except between 18 June and 2 July) or Dr Gayle McPherson on 0141 331 8480 (except between 24 June and 15 July).
