Ok, there's been no response to this so far so I'll bite.
I'm presuming that by "hypertagging" you mean the infrared (and now
bluetooth) tags developed and sold by
Hypertag Ltd.
I looked into this several years ago as part of some consultancy for
the Tate Modern system. Things may have changed considerably since
then but my conclusions were.
1) The hypertag system was quite expensive per tag and you had to pay
a yearly subscription.
2) We looked into a lot of different technologies to let the PDA know
which object you were looking at (infrared, bluetooth, barcodes etc)
and found that for the Tate the best solution was a number by each
object that you type in.
3) You don't give many details in your email but I suspect you're
looking at the "Mentor" phone based system. For any phone based
system I'd recommend that:
First consider your own phone. Is it capable of receiving and playing
back this content? Do you know how to make it work and would you be
interested? You may not have the most up to date phone but my guess
is that yours is no worse than the average for your visitors.Speaking
personally my phone does have bluetooth but I find it a real hassle
to use and would much rather read information from a sign!
Then do a straw poll of your visitors. Ask them for their phone model
to find out if it supports the right technology, then ask if they
know how to use it. This should give you an idea of the likely take
up. Also, several years ago I was told that roughly 50% of people in
the UK have a Pay-as-you-go phone which means they only upgrade if
the old one stops working. The other 50% have a contract which gives
them a new phone every 2 years or so. The up shot is that your
visitors are likely to be split between those with capable phones and
those without.
My personal prediction is that the future of this sort of thing will
be that you'll install wireless internet at your site and visitors
will then use their phones to access short web pages containing your
content. This is already possible on some high end phones like the
iPhone and my guess is that it will take 3-4 years before a
significant number of your visitors have phones which support this.
Hope this is useful. If you have more specific information then I may
be able to provide more help.
Cheers
