Deep Zoom (which is admittedly fairly impressive):

I'm becoming fairly familiar with OpenLayers (which is really designed for
viewing and zooming maps, but would work for photo tiles too). It is a
little complex though (my head is still hurting from having to understand
map projection conversions).
The blog post also points towards a javascript implementation of Deep Zoom
