I hope the following message will provide a deep breath of relieve for those
that had been working on a submission and encourage others to compose a
piece to submit.
After conversations with David Lamond and the editors Journal of Management
History about the logistics of upcoming special issues, the decision was made
to postpone publishing the special issue entitled “Celebrating the lives and
works of Management Pioneers” until early 2010.
Therefore we are able to extend the deadline for the call for papers for this
issue until October 30, 2009. We are also going to submit a symposium
proposal to the History Division for AOM 2010 to highlight the papers that are
selected for this special issue.
Special Issue Details
Over thirty years ago, Daniel Wren and Robert Hay accepted the call from the
Academy of Management to assess the most outstanding contributors
to “American business and management thought and practice” between the
years of 1774 and 1974 (Wren & Hay, 1977, p.471). In 2007, we undertook a
replication and extension of their study that included management pioneers
from across the globe. The study, which will be published in an upcoming
issue of the JMH, identified a “top ten” who left their footprints on the
landscape of management thought and practice: 1) Frederick Taylor, 2) Max
Weber, 3) Chester Barnard, 4) Peter Drucker, 5) Henri Fayol, 6) Adam Smith,
7) Herbert Simon, 8) Alfred Chandler, 9) Joseph Schumpeter, and 10) Alfred
Sloan.
Our goal for this special edition of the Journal of Management History is to
celebrate the contributions of this group, and firmly instill them in the scholarly
institutional memory (cf Coffey and Hoffman, 2003; Van Fleet and Wren,
2005), with an article about each for the special issue. Your submission
should include a short biography and a consideration of how/why these
scholars made such a lasting impact on business and management thought,
practice, theory, and philosophy.
Electronic submissions should be made using mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jmh.
Contributors should follow the manuscript requirements and author guidelines
provided at http://www.emeraldinsight.com/info/journals/jmh/notes.jsp and in
the back of each issue of the Journal of Management History.
