Dear All,
We will have another cosmology seminar tomorrow by Louie Strigari
(Stanford):
Milky Way Satellites: Galaxies with a Dark Side.
The theory of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) predicts the existence of
thousands of dark matter satellites that survive to orbit the Milky
Way, as well as steep cusps in the central regions of these dark
matter halos. The discovery of many low-luminosity Milky Way
satellites and observations of their stellar kinematics is now
allowing for an unprecedented test of CDM. In this talk I will discuss
a theoretical interpretation of these new observations, focusing on
what they are telling us about the nature of dark matter on small
scales and the formation of galaxies on these smallest scales.
Specific topics I will cover include the mass distributions of the
Milky Way satellites, predictions for indirect dark matter detection
experiments, and predictions for the number of satellites in future
surveys.
The seminar is at 12pm in H503, Huxley Building, South Kensington Campus.
We will go to lunch with the speaker at 1pm.
Regards,
Paniez
