Hi to everyone
First up, thanks to all, and particularly Mick and Ivar, for keeping the
conversations going here. I feel very guilty for not chipping in more,
particularly as some of you may know how we're going to get some real
experience of integration and the need for standards very soon here at
Worcester. But, as I'm sure is true for many others, I'm doing my very best
to follow the threads as closely as possible.
On the latest conversation around the question of staff stations and
integration with the LMS, I'm not sure that I'm completely understanding the
implications of everything being discussed. At the moment, and I stress at
the moment, we have a certain amount of integration between our RFID supplier
and our Talis systems. There is enough for a staff workstation running Alto
to make use of an RFID pad as a data input device, utilizing just the
identifier held on the tag, and this is currently all we need. It will accept
multiple items, provided it doesn't hit certain exceptions (due to the way
Alto works). Just not sure why we would want extra information on the tag as
I think Ivar suggests.
However, I totally understand the potential around developments in smart
shelving, and why there would be concerns over a pretty much constant stream
of information running from these units to our LMS. Just not sure how I marry
this up with keeping sources of information synchronized with what we would
see as being our authoritative source - the LMS. Can't see that changing, but
I'm happy to hear why I should think differently.
So, just to say that this conversation, along with the broader topic of
standards etc is invaluable to what we are trying to achieve here so thank
you, but apologies if I need to ask the odd stupid question...
All the best

Subject: Re: RFID/LMS database interaction - summary and reflections
Speaking for Axiell/i_TAG, our staff solution certainly only passes item
information across to the staff-side application.
Admittedly, when used with our own LMS, the integration is better (more
exception messages when transactions cannot be completed) but even with 3rd-
party LMS solutions we offer a multi-item capability, working seamlessly
the existing staff-side application.
An API would offer a more foolproof solution but I don't believe that it is
