I know nothing about the two solutions Mick Fortune mentions. However, P.V.
Supa recently introduced a separate database designed for handling the
interaction between RFID-units.
The P.V. Supa database has NO relation to the existing LMS and it is not
messing into the communication between various units (i.e. self-service
units, staff stations or gates) and the LMS as this communication is handled
by SIP or NCIP. The P.V. Supa database does not save any information about
materials or users, as these information are stored in the LMS.
The P.V. Supa database manage RFID information facilitating easy interaction
between the various RFID units, enables easy statistical information, allow
for 3rd party use of information etc. There are many possibilities using
P.V. Supa system, which any library going RFID should consider, as it opens
the RFID-system for many new possibilities in the future, compared to the
present solutions on the market.

Subject: RFID/LMS database interaction
I have recently been advised of two RFID solutions being proposed that are
using a separate database from the LMS to control RFID units within a
One controls security the other self-service.
I had seen a schematic for a third such solution some time ago but believe
that it never in fact came to market.
This seems to be part of an emerging trend for RFID systems to declare
themselves independent from the LMS/ILS and go it alone. That may be an
inveitable consequence of technologicak change but at this moment in time I
am finding it difficult however to understand or conceptualise how this
work in practice? It is not yet clear whether the scenarios on offer are
hypothetical although both claim to have been market tested.
I would very much welcome any inputs the list can offer on how the two
databases might be kept in synch and any impact on performance of doing so -
if anyone out there has experience of such a solution?
