Production sites have SLA availability targets (which get rolled up into regional weighted averages), and management would be unhappy if glitches due to failing jobs and software roll-backs were to occur.

I agree with John comments. If "the management" realizes the realities
of a complex highly evolving system as a grid(or should I say IT?) and
changes its stance, we can discuss about Andreas suggestion. But I guess
it is too late now.
However as long SLAs are present, what at least I am doing (to answer to
Arnau) after several painful lessons and nights of debugging all kinds
of strange errors is to wait for someone else to risk and get burned first.
That keeps the lights "green" and bosses happy. In fact some of the
best conforming SLAs sites, at least as availability/reliability I know
of are those that do not perform any update at all. I know that this
problem was stated some times in the past but there has been no
improvements. My opinion, we are worshiping numbers too much to foresee
how to change things.
Sad but true.
Cheers,
