If you've had a chance to look at the maps for the Chepstow Curehind you might note that it is within a loop of the Mountan Brook, but not on the water. This would suggest a channel delivered water to the mill. Would an OE cyrf (modern kerf) suffice here? The behind portion of the name might indicate that the cyrf was behind the mill, that is to say that the mill was between the brook and the cyrf.
In the list of Domesday mills there is a Cerfeli (unidentified as of 1960) in Dorset where there are the Corfes, Castle & Mullen.
