The Steering Committee for the ‘Ecologies of Modern Heritage: Studying the
Cultural and Material Environments of Recent Historical Change’ research
cluster wish to receive expressions of interest in attending a research forum
to be held at the Open University on Wednesday 8 July 2009.
‘Ecologies of Modern Heritage’ is a research cluster funded by the AHRC/EPSRC
Science and Heritage Programme. Our central aim is to focus on the multi-
disciplinary study of modern heritage, and employ the concept of ‘heritage
ecologies’ to facilitate new collaborations in interpretation and representation.
Our research cluster has brought together leading researchers from pure and
applied science, social science, and arts/humanities backgrounds to engage
with a range of stakeholders, including the professional heritage sector.
Through a series of workshops at Bletchley Park, Bucks, researchers are
developing site-specific, interdisciplinary collaborations, and it is expected
that these collaborations will lead to new research initiatives, either through
Science and Heritage or responsive-mode calls. Read more on the project
website: http://users.ox.ac.uk/~arch0217/index.html
As part of this project we will be holding a research forum to explore some of
the major issues that have arisen through the course of two previous
workshops. The Open University will be hosting the forum, which will include
an introduction to the general concepts of the research cluster and
presentations by four research groups that have developed ideas from their
interactions with the workshop site of Bletchley Park. The groups will be
exploring concepts relating to History/Memory, Transmission, Systems and
Decay.
We view the Forum as an opportunity to engage in conversation, discussion
and debate between researchers and practitioners about these major issues
relating to heritage science as presented at Bletchley Park.
We would like to invite expressions of interest to be sent to Dr Laura
McAtackney at [log in to unmask] with your name, affiliation (if
appropriate), contact details and information on why you would like to attend
the forum.
Admission to the forum will be free and the Open University has kindly offered
to provide refreshments and lunch for the attendees. The forum will run from
10:30 am to 3:30 pm. Unfortunately we cannot cover travel costs to this
event. As attendance is limited we would be grateful if you could forward any
expressions of interest in attending within the next week.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
All the best,
Dr Laura McAtackney
