Fixed Term Contract for 12 months
There has been a dramatic fall in the number of psychiatric in-patient beds in the UK in recent decades and at the same time rates of detention under the Mental Health Act have risen steeply. There are also stark ethnic differences in pathways to mental health care and in rates of in-patient treatment and coercion, and these trends may be linked. Under the direction of Professor Scott Weich, Professor of Psychiatry, you will contribute to a collaborative study on changing patterns of psychiatric treatment in the UK, particularly the use of in-patient beds as well as detention under the Mental Health Act. This study is a joint undertaking between senior academic psychiatrists at Warwick Medical School, Newcastle University and Queen Mary's London.
The work will involve secondary analysis of complex datasets to address a number of questions of importance to providers, commissioners and policy makers regarding in-patient treatment, trends in bed numbers and ethnic inequalities in the delivery of mental health care. This work is timely given current economic and service development contexts, particularly the imperative to continue reducing the bed base to fund further improvements in community services.
You should possess a PhD or equivalent and have expertise in advanced statistical methods, including multilevel modelling. You must have experience of managing and analysing large and complex datasets.
Informal enquiries: Professor Scott Weich ([log in to unmask]).
