Mike,
Good thoughts, Sabina. I studied ethnography with David Hufford while
at Penn, and can attest that he is a strong mentor. I have a good
friend who did his dissertation there on mystical experience with
Hufford as one of his advisers, and had a very good experience with the
support he received from him. Although he is, of course, connected to
the Folkore program there, since that program went through a number of
restructurings over the past decades, he is much more strongly
associated with Religious Studies there--which is where you would want
to target yourself for work like this.
Also note that Andy Neuberg, or neurotheology fame, is at Penn. He's in
the medical school, but Penn is structured to encourage bringing faculty
together from across disciplines as well as schools for graduate work.
I never interacted with him directly, and I don't know how available he
would actually be, but it's certainly worth investigating.
Regards,
Grant Potts
