As an attorney in private practice in the USA AND a mining historian, I
agree that copyright law is a rather sticky proposition. LINKING to a
site is not normally considered a copyright violation unless it is linked
in such a way as to frame your work inside the linkee's website so as to
make it look like it is their work product.
I have had the US BLM post a retyped version of my work product on their
website [which was derived from a contract we fulfilled with them, but
retained the copyright]
They graciously agreed to several changes I requested of them, and
everyone seems happy for the moment.
Best to ask permission of copyright holders and webmasters before linking
or cutting and pasting!
